About the 1891 Census
Welcome to the web-site mounting of the electronic version of the 1891 census index. This is a joint project of the Public Archives and Records Office and the Prince Edward Island Genealogical Society. The Genealogical Society volunteers have transcribed the entire census and developed a database which contains complete census information. This index is owned by the P.E.I. Genealogical Society and is provided in this format for research purposes only. Copying of the complete index is prohibited.
The full census is available in both microfilm and Genealogy Society printed transcripts at the Public Archives and Records Office. It is also available on microfilm through inter-institutional loan or by the purchase of transcripts from the Society. Details on acquiring printed copies or interlibrary loan are provided below.
The on-line index contains 25,229 entries from the database of over 90,000 names. The index contains information for all those identified as heads of households or those in the household having a different surnames from the head of the household. The names of other family members living in the household are found only in the full census. Use the search program to locate names of interest in the database. The references you will find provide the lot or township number in which the name appears in the census.
This is a finding aid and should not be relied on to replace the original manuscript census. Both the original census and the Genealogical Society transcripts may contain errors. Note that census data for Lots 21 and 22 is missing and is not included in this index. Owing to time restrictions the staff of the Public Archives and Records Office are not able to undertake searches of the census in response to research requests.
